Drunk vs. Stoned 3

The Ranch is pleased to announce Drunk vs. Stoned 3, a group exhibition including work by 70 contemporary artists. The exhibition is the latest chapter in an ongoing investigation into the two most ubiquitous forms of intoxicated transcendence, to determine what promise, if any, they may still hold in relation to making and thinking about art.

Beyond ordinary decadence, drunk and stoned can be seen as metaphors for two equal and opposite approaches to artistic practice. The thematic and conceptual interrogations of intoxication underscore artistic experimentation, visual instability, even certain subject matter. In this show, the lowered inhibitions and impulsive decisions of drunk stand in stark contrast to the heightened sensitivity and methodical meandering of stoned. Using this blurred lens, artists have been selected to represent one of the two mind states. The show is installed across The Ranch and a new gallery location, The Ranch at the Dock.

Drunk vs. Stoned was first staged in New York City at Gavin Brown’s Passerby Gallery and Bar in 2004. In 2005, Drunk vs. Stoned 2 put forth an expanded upon sequel that took place at their Greenwich Street location. Nontraditional spaces further the off-kilter approach of the first two exhibitions. Drunk vs Stoned 1 featured art installed in a papier-mâché cave. Drunk vs. Stoned 2 showcased an old-timey saloon where a local NYC jug band performed at the raucous opening. Presented seventeen years later, Drunk vs. Stoned 3 integrates alumni from the first two exhibitions, as well as identifying new artists who have emerged as important players in furthering and complicating the discursive inquiry of this exhibition’s thesis. In some cases it is clear which player is on which team.In others it seems like artworks could be influenced by both substances. Therefore we invite the viewer to discern who is drunk and who is stoned.

As an operating horse farm with non traditional spaces to activate and with plenty of room for a soccer field, The Ranch provides an ideal setting to continue traditions from past editions of Drunk vs. Stoned. Montauk, which is known as “a small quaint drinking town with a fishing problem,” provides a new audience that will be essential to getting to the bottom of this discourseThe exhibition spans three distinct locations: West Barn, The Ranch’s exhibition space; East Barn, an active horse stable; and The Ranch at The Dock, a gallery space on an active marina.
